Houston Community College has an EMT paramedic training program that offers students the necessary courses for certification at the EMT-Basic level on through to paramedic.
Houston Community College, including the administration building, is located in downtown Houston at 3100 Main Street #1000. The college paramedic school program is located at 555 Community College Dr. Houston 77013. The clinicals for the courses will be located at various hospitals throughout the city.
Program Information
The paramedic certificate program offered through Houston Community College begins with EMT Basic certification and continues into a two-year paramedic training program. The first and second semesters consist of both classroom and lab work. Students will complete 4 clinical courses throughout these 4.5 semesters. The final semester will end with a fieldwork internship.
Once training is completed for EMT-Basic certification, an additional 4.5 semesters will be required to finish paramedic training (1.5 years). If a paramedic training student decides to pursue the AAS degree, additional hours are required. Houston Community College’s paramedic certification program is 37 semester hours – actual clock hours of the certification courses will be approximately 1344 hours.
The EMT paramedic school program is offered in both the fall and spring semesters. Spring classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 8 am-5 pm. Fall courses are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8 am-5 pm. Some Saturday classes are available.
Program Prerequisites
For entry into any of the health sciences and EMS programs offered by Houston Community College, students must meet some requirements including, meeting a minimum reading score on ASSET or CELSA exam, complete required developmental courses, complete the health sciences application, and possess CPR certification and proof of current immunizations. Additional requirements:
- must have a valid driver’s license
- must be 18 years of age
- must pass a background check
- must pass drug screening - and stay drug free
- must be EMT certified prior to entering paramedic program
- may not have received a dishonorable military discharge
- must have successfully completed ENG 101 or take the college placement exam and score into ENG 101
