The John C. Calhoun Community College (CCC) is one of the largest schools in Alabama offering entry-level training for EMTs and continuing with EMS school courses through Paramedic licensing and certification.
Applications and Program Prerequisites
Individuals interested in Calhoun Community College may register in person or apply online through the school’s website application process. After completing the application process the applicant is required to next meet with an adviser who assists with a degree plan and help set up paramedic training course schedules. To be accepted in the EMT and/or Paramedic school program, one must:
- have a high school diploma or the equivalent
- must be 18 years of age
- pass a physical examination
- must pass a background check
- must have current immunization records & screened for tuberculosis
- must pass drug screening - and stay drug free
Program Information
Emergency Medical Technicians
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) serve the state of Alabama as First Responders to emergencies and medical emergencies. EMT students will be trained to have knowledge and skills in non-invasive life support techniques including: bleeding control, bandage wounds, administer oxygen, splint fractures, and use of other measures to stabilize a patient for transport to a medical facility. At Calhoun Community College EMT school the training is the beginning level of EMS licensure and is usually required for an individual who wishes to be hired by an ambulance service or fire department.
EMT classes are offered three times a year at CCC and students can select day or evening classes. The EMT Certificate course is one semester in length. This semester consists of at least two courses, EMS 118 (lecture and lab class) & EMS 119 (a clinical class).
NOTE: A CCC the EMT certificate program is not eligible for funding via Title IV funding - Pell Grant, SEOG, or Direct Student Loan.
Paramedics
Paramedics (NRPs) serve the state of Alabama at the highest level of pre-hospital care. Paramedic students at CCC will learn to treat cardiac arrest with defibrillation, reduce shock by intravenous fluid administration, record and interpret EKG findings, administer pharmacological therapies, and provide ventilation and airway protection through endotracheal intubation.
Calhoun Community College offers paramedic school courses through either a Long Certificate program or an Associate of Applied Science degree for paramedics. Pre-requisite courses (such as EMT Basic) are required and once completed, the paramedic program is three semesters (running consecutive) in length. The daytime class for paramedic students begins each summer.

Paramedic School Program Prerequisites
Paramedic courses can be applied for online and the application can be found at the CCC website. The online paramedic program application must be started and completed in one sitting. The applicant is not able to save any part of the application process. Therefore, it is important to start the online application with all the required electronic documents ready to upload. Applicants can find the list of required documents on the same webpage of the application information.
Calhoun College holds at least three information sessions each year in order to provide individuals interested in the paramedic school program an opportunity to learn details about the courses, fees, application process, and to ask questions. Potential students are required to attend only ONE session and pre-registration is not required; dates and times of the sessions are posted on the CCC’s main EMS Program web page.
