EMT and Paramedic Career Training

Online programs in EMS and paramedic are offered at different degree levels that include certificate, associates, bachelors and master’s degrees. In addition there also are conversion programs online that transition paramedics for work in the field as registered nurses (RNs) or train emergency medical technicians (EMTs) for work in EMS management.

Online Paramedic programs typically cannot be completed solely online instead the programs usually consists of some in-person courses that include hospital, clinical and field experiences with a Paramedic team as part of the online Paramedic program. The other part would be the online phase that can be completed at the students own pace via their computer. The total participation and completion of the programs can lead to a certificate in emergency medical training: Paramedic or an associate degree in emergency medical services (EMS).

Levels on EMT

EMT-Basic level

Training emphasizes emergency skills (managing respiratory, trauma, and cardiac emergencies, and patient assessment). Formal courses are shared with time in an emergency department or ambulance. Passed written and practical examination administered by the State licensing agency or the NREMT by graduates

EMT-Intermediate level

EMT-Intermediate 1985 and EMT-Intermediate 1999, require 30 to 350 hours of training based on range of practice. Students learn advanced skills (use of advanced airway devices, intravenous fluids, and some medications). training requirements vary by State.

Paramedic

Students receive training in anatomy and physiology as well as advanced medical skills and training can lead to an associate’s degree. These programs one to two years to complete. Students are prepared to take the NREMT examination to become certified as a Paramedic. Additional coursework, clinical and field experience is required.

PERCOM

PERCOM courses are a mixture of online teaching and face to face training. They offer courses in ECA, EMR(Emergency Medical Response), First Responder, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Basic , EMT(Emergency Medical Technician) Intermediate / Advanced and Paramedic. Their online courses are open entry/open exit, which means you begin coursework as soon as you have completed the registration process and complete the course at you own pace. PERCOM is accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services and their CE (continuing Education)courses are approved by The American College of Emergency Physicians, an organization by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS). Central Pennsylvania Community College

Central Pennsylvania Community College offers an online paramedic program. The online portion of the paramedic program is held online instead of on a campus in the classroom. The students also attend once a week a clinical lab. The certificate program is a total 37 credits, the degree program is 79 credits and the hospital clinical and field rotations are 250 hours each. After completion of either program the National Registry of EMT-Paramedics (NREMTP) exam are eligible for graduates to take. . Lenoir Community College

Lenoir Community College, offers a hybrid program in emergency medical training (EMT). Most course work and general education requirements, as well as the EMT credentialing can be completed online. This program can lead to an associate’s degree (in emergency medical services (EMS)) or a certificate. For the associate degree program students must complete the general education requirements of the college. Both week and weekend schedules are available to complete the EMT certification. After completion of the certificate or associate degree programs an EMT-Paramedic certificate or an associate in EMS degree is awarded and the National Registry of EMT-Paramedics (NREMTP) exam are eligible for graduates to take.
