University of Texas Health Science Center EMT Paramedic Training Program

The University of Texas Health Science Center EMT paramedic training program offers EMT training students the necessary courses for certification at the highest level of EMT paramedic.

The University of Texas Health Science Center is located at 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas. The U of Texas extends to campuses in the metropolitan border communities of Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. The school offers an EMT-Basic and an EMT-Paramedic certificate course.

EMT and Paramedic Program Information

The EMT Basic EMT training certificate program is offered during spring and summer semesters. Students meet for classroom and on hands skills practice from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., 3 days per week. There are also 45 hours of clinical rotations required during the semester. Total credit hours are 6.

The EMT-Paramedic program has a June 1st deadline for entry into the paramedic training program which begins in the fall. Spring deadline applications are due by November 1st, and summer applications (for EMT Basic only) has a deadline of April 1st. The program consists of 33 credit hours. That means students will spend approximately 670 hours in the classroom and practicing skills, and another 375 hours in clinical settings. There is also a part time option available. The full time option will begin in the fall and ends at the end of the succeeding spring semester. Classes will meet Tuesday through Thursday from 8 to 5. During the clinical rotation, students will be scheduled on Mondays and Fridays from 8 to 4, or from 4 to midnight, with some weekend options as well. These class times may vary. There is a part time option available where students are able to enroll in full time courses as a part time student. This option will take an extra semester to complete.

For students who are Texas residents the cost per credit hour is $96. Out of state residents will pay $325 per credit hour. These prices are subject to change. In addition, students can expect to pay other fees for the library, labs, insurance, and books. There may be additional charges as well, such as background tests and drug screening.

Program Prerequisites

Some of the prerequisites required for admission into the EMT training (Basic) and EMT paramedic training program include:

  • must be at least 18 years of age
  • must pass a criminal background check
  • must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • must pass a drug screening
  • must possess current CPR certification
  • must enroll in EMT-basic training and pass EMT certification (for paramedic)
