City College of San Francisco Paramedic Training Program

The City College of San Francisco Paramedic Training Program has both a certificate and associate degree program in paramedic. The EMT paramedic training program offers EMT training students the necessary courses for certification at the EMT-Basic level on through to EMT paramedic. The CCSF Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

The EMT training program is held at three campuses:
John Adams Campus - 1860 Hayes St, Room 47
Mission Campus - 1125 Valencia St, Rm 269
Evans Campus - 1400 Evans Avenue, Room 102

All campuses are in San Francisco. Courses are held at a specific campus depending upon which semester you enroll in and which EMT training level of certification you are pursuing. For instance, the City College of San Francisco offers an EMT training program for individuals wishing to become a paramedic at the John Adams Campus.

In addition, Galileo High School offers EMT training - Basic 101 A & B class for high school students enrolled at Galileo.

EMT and Paramedic Program Information

EMT training at City College of San Francisco begins with EMT – Basic and continues through to either an EMT paramedic certification or an Associate’s degree in Paramedicine. The paramedic program offered through the City College of San Francisco begins each spring semester. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 5 pm. EMT 104, which is held in the spring semester, students will attend class for 12 Tuesdays consecutively, from 10 am to 4 pm. The summer semester consists of clinical hours, which are held at San Francisco General Hospital. The clinical hours will be spent in the ER, the psychiatric emergency services, labor and delivery, pediatrics, and the ICU. Rotations in an operating room of a contracted hospital will also be completed. Clinical hospital and field internship hours are completed in addition to classroom hours.

The Fall semester starts in August and runs to December 19th, 2012.

The didactic and clinical phases of the EMT Paramedic Program take 12-15 months to complete. The coursework runs January through December, and clinicals run through March. The fieldwork/ internship portion of the program takes approximately 4-6 months to complete.

Tuition costs for the program are $36 per semester unit for residents of California and $187 per semester unit for non-residents. A $17 health benefit fee and a $100 lab fee will be assessed for all students. The cost of books for the program is approximately $500. In addition, there will be fees for PHTLS, PEPP, and ACLS certification and an optional fee for the field internship.

Program Prerequisites

Classes fill quickly and it is recommended that all potential EMT training applicants call the main office at 415-561-1900 for a check of paramedic training slots available, and to place your name on the mailing list for notification about the next information meeting.

Potential EMT paramedic program students must complete all prerequisites and take an entrance examination, which consists of 100 multiple-choice questions based upon the EMT-1 Scope of Practice. Some of the prerequisites include: a high school diploma or equivalent, proof of current immunizations, possess a current driver’s license in California, be EMT-1 and CPR certified, have completed AED training, and pass a background check. Three to six months of internships/field experience as an EMT is also required. Every two years individuals will be required to attend an informational regarding the written exam that is offered, and which passing is required for re-certification.
