EMT Paramedic Training and Schools in Indiana

EMT training and EMT paramedic training, licensing, and certification in the state of Indiana are governed by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Indiana Emergency Medical Services Commission. Education and training must either meet or exceed the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for EMS programs. This state bureau must approve all the applicants, as well as their certifications, before the individual can be employed in the state of Indiana as an EMT.

The state of Indiana has four main levels of EMS licensing: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic.

Training Requirements

To become a certified EMT or EMT paramedic in the state of Indiana an individual:

  • must be at least 18 years of age

Licensing and Certification Requirements

Once EMS training is successfully completed, you will have to pass the Indiana State EMT or Paramedic Written Exam as well as the Indiana State EMT and Paramedic Practical Exam. Unlike most states, the National Registry Exam (NREMT) is not the premier requirement exam. The NREMT is only accepted if you possess an EMT license in another state. In such cases, it must be current for Indiana EMS licensing to be considered.

The state EMT exam is very similar to the NREMT exam. It is comprised of multiple choice questions that are divided into sections based on the Basics of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Transportation Curriculum. The questions covers basic items such as bleeding control, splints, and CPR, and go through to questions on medical and trauma assessment. Study Guides are available.

EMS Reciprocity of Licenses & Certifications from Other States

Indiana does permit Reciprocity of candidate from other states. Individuals must, however, submit applications, have current certifications, and should download the Reciprocity Indiana Curriculum Information found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security website. There you will find curriculum and testing information for reciprocity with the state of Indiana.
