University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences EMT Paramedic Training School

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) EMT paramedic training program offers EMT training students the necessary courses for certification at the highest level of EMT paramedic. In 2013, UAMS began offering a new bachelor’s degree program in Emergency Medical Sciences, the first of its kind in the state, designed to enhance the management and clinical skills of emergency services professionals. However, that Bachelor of Science program is currently on hold as there is an “in-progress” planning to transfer the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and the Paramedic programs from UAMS to University of Arkansas – Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock. The UAMS Paramedic training education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. They follow the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions.

EMT Enrollment Prerequisites

  • must have a valid driver’s license
  • have a high school diploma or the equivalent
  • must be 18 years of age
  • pass a physical examination
  • must pass a background check
  • must have current immunization records
  • must pass drug screening - and stay drug free

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) School Pre-Requisite Requirements:

Admission into the EMT program requires a minimum of one college-level course, in addition to a college Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 2.0.

Once the U of Arkansas EMT training program is completed, students will be qualified to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Examination (NREMT). They will then need to meet the above prerequisites along with the following to continue paramedic education certification.

Paramedic Enrollment Prerequisites

  • must be EMT certified prior to entering paramedic program
  • may not have received a dishonorable military discharge
  • must have successfully completed ENG 101 or take the college placement exam and score into ENG 101
  • must hold a current CPR card
  • must have a thorough medical exam
  • a college Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 2.0 is required for admission to the program.

Paramedic School Pre-Requisite Requirements:

Certified EMTs who have completed a minimum of one college-level course may apply for the paramedic education class program. A student interested in advancing to the Paramedic School Program should contact the University of Alabama Medicals Services’ Department for advisement for a paramedic interview. This Department tests applicants for competency in anatomy and physiology if they have never or never successfully completed a full body systems course from an accredited institution.

Program Information

These EMT and paramedic training credit hours will include: Anatomy and physiology, principles of microbiology, theory of patient assessment, management and operations assessment, theory of paramedic essentials to include airway management and ventilation, medical, OB/GYN, neonatal, behavior and trauma emergencies, and emergency medical services operations are just some of the courses.

Paramedic students will also take part in semi-annual field internship exercises that include everything from catastrophes to shootings. Paramedic students assess the scene, request additional resources, then take action such as triage the patients, treat them, and preparing mock patients for ambulance transport to receiving facilities. The nearby UAMS Simulation Center serves as the exercise emergency department.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences EMT training program follows the national standard EMS curriculum set forth by the Department of Transportation. Students are trained in theory, an assortment of technical skills, and clinical fieldwork.
