The NREMT exam covers different levels of emergency medicine. It lists from First Responder to EMT-P. As a First Responder, the testing includes roles and responsibilities, personal and scene protection, legal aspects of medical activities in their scope, human anatomy, lifting and transporting. Of course the basics of airway, patient assessment, circulation (including basic CPR), illness and injury, as well as basic childbirth. Skills to perform vary by state so be sure to consult with your instructor. Most will require you to perform CPR, spinal immobilization, and bleeding control. This exam costs approximately $65.
The EMT-basic has a similar exam yet it concentrates more on medical or behavior emergency and trauma. The EMT-basic has a primary concern of maintaining the airway. Be prepared to perform CPR, spinal immobilization, bleeding control, and also airway maintenance. These skills will also vary by state.
The Intermediate level of EMT or EMT-I will prepare for the exam by focusing on all of the above as well as questions regarding intravenous therapy, maintaining airway with an endotracheal tube, and advanced CPR. The written exam consists of approximately 150 questions. Practical skills are very similar to the above but focus more around the advanced scenarios in trauma, medical, ventilatory management, cardiac (interpreting ECG strips), IV, and pediatric skills. It will cost $100 to take the exam.
The EMT-P or paramedic is a master at all other levels. The paramedic is capable of interpreting and managing ECG rhythms. Their skills are tested on managing scenes and acting in accordance to triage indications. They are required to know all above skills at the mastery level. To sit for the exam it will cost $110 for the application fee.
Preparing for your NREMT testing should begin with your local area NREMT preparatory school. Many community colleges or private medical facilities offer classes on the different levels of the EMT. They are also a great asset to advising you on your states processes. Also many medical facilities that employ EMT-P will also have volunteer programs that will help you develop skill and technique. Practice is key to being able to perform the skills under pressure. It will also help with medical assessment to actually see how a patient presents.
If for some reason you fail the NREMT, all passed portions of the exam are valid for 12 months. You will be allowed to attempt the exam 3 times. If within that time frame you have still failed to pass the exam, you will be required to revisit courses required to get to that exam.
