Paramedic School: Didactic

Paramedic School consists of different phases of training. Phase 1 is the didactic phase, which is the classroom learning portion. This is where you learn all the beginning basics. Phase 2 is clinical rotations which are done in a hospital setting, and the 3rd phase is the field training. When you reach this level, each student is assigned to a paramedic unit to train with the mobile intensive care team. The student will act under the supervision of a paramedic preceptor, applying paramedic care to patients in the field setting.

What is the didactic phase of paramedic school? From the Greek, didactic literally means "teaching." This is the teaching or instructional phase of the training. This is where you learn all the beginning medical skills. Learning how the body works and how it is made and all the foundational information.

What is required to get into the paramedic training course?
Some students will have taken a emergency medical technician course first before applying for the paramedic course. In some states certification as an EMT is required prior to registering for the course. The courses for EMT take 18-24 months total. This would be the equivalent of an associates degree.

What skills are learned in the didactic phase of training?
Areas of study will include instruction in topics such as: anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology,EKG interpretation, drug administration, chemical dependency, airway management, toxicology, pediatrics, obstetrics and trauma emergencies. This training is usually given in 8 hour segments.

How hard is didactic?
It depends on the student. Students are required to have completed certification for an EMT with a 2 yr degree prior to applying. This shouldn't be that difficult because you will already have had a lot of the preliminary training in your EMT course. It will be like a refresher course in some things but you will learn a lot of new skills as well. So study hard and pay attention and you'll do fine.

What is the best way to prepare for didactic?
Classes recommended for course preparation include: anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and chemistry, electrocardiography (ECG), algebra and having at least a 10th grade reading level.

How long does it take?
The training course lasts approximately 12 months. The course consists of 1250-1302.5 hours divided into didactic, lab session, clinical rotation, field experience and field internship.

Are clinicals done during or after didactic?
Clinicals are done with the didactic phase.Clinical schedule is normally 3, 8-hour shifts per week for 2 months. They are run together so you will be ready for field training last. The field training phase consists of 480 hours or roughly 3-6 months of hands-on application.
