Paramedic Clinicals
Paramedics work in the medical field and are responsible for recognizing medical and traumatic events. Since they are usually first to treat a patient, it is critical that they are experienced in noticing signs and symptoms so that they can provide proper care immediately. Clinical trials help paramedics to practice care giving skills and see and treat these real life situations. Since a clinical is a specific designated field of medical treatment, it gives the paramedic a more in depth and focused view of the emergency. It is not meant to be a first time approach, more like a review to what has already been learned.

Clinical experiences and hours will vary upon your program and state requirements. Typical clinicals begin with the EMT-Basic and are structured around providing basic care of maintaining airway, spinal immobilization, and stocking the ambulance. You may also work with a fire department to learn safety and personal protection.
As an EMT-Intermediate, you will spend time under supervision in either hospital or medical facility to practice intravenous therapy. This is good grounding to practice IV placement and see different types of patients and how their veins differ. You will also spend time in diabetic facilities and behavioral facilities to experience on hand patients who have altered mental status and many times will take and record basic vital statistics such as blood pressure and temperature.
At the Paramedic level, clinical trials will focus on trauma, medical, and advanced cardiac treatment. Paramedics will work in the emergency room and also in surgery to practice intubation. While in most cases, the paramedic will not be able to actually run a code due to legalities, they will be responsible for detailing the code or offering assistance and answering questions while it is being ran. This is also the perfect conditions to see what the paramedic will have to incur during pressured moments.
In each clinical you will be tested on PPE (personal protective equipment), patient and personal safety, patient privacy and dignity, infectious disease control. Also you will be required to keep detailed reports of each clinical and sometimes fill out similar forms that the paramedic is responsible for. These sheets and now computer programs are critical information to be transferred with the patient to the medical facility with concerns of the presenting problems. A paramedic is responsible to recognize things in the environment that could have caused the onset condition.
