Alvin Community College Texas EMT Paramedic Training School Program

Located in the southeast portion of the state, Alvin Community College sets in Pearland, Texas and mainly serves the Houston and Galveston area.

Program Information

Several paths are offered by Alvin Community College for students desiring to enroll in the school. Beginning with two Associate of Applied Science degrees, these are Emergency Medical Technology and EMT training with Enhanced Skills Certificate. Other options include certificate programs in Emergency Medical Technology (verses the Associate’s Degree for this program) and/or the Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate program. The EMT Enhanced Skills Certificate prepares students for the national paramedic examination of which passing is a requirement to become certified as an EMT or paramedic.

Alvin Community College consists of three levels of EMS training: EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate, and Paramedic. It usually takes two years to complete the Associate EMS program. Total credits required for paramedic certification: 40.

The 40 credits will include courses in or similar to: anatomy and physiology, principles of microbiology, theory of patient assessment, management and operations assessment, theory of paramedic essentials to include airway management and ventilation, medical, OB/GYN, neonatal, behavior and trauma emergencies, and emergency medical services operations.

Program Prerequisites

To qualify, a student must be admitted to the college and accepted into the paramedic training school. Copies of any certifications currently held will be required upon applying. Students must be at least 18-years-old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and hold a current (updated) basic CPR certification. Students will be expected to pay for all the state health services fees, including examination fees and to purchase appropriate uniforms and equipment. A physical examination, copy of current immunizations, and a TB test are additional requirements. Students must also purchase liability insurance for the entire time they are enrolled in the program.

Accredited Certification

Alvin Community College’s EMT program is accredited and it adheres to the curriculum required and set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Health Services, American Heart Association and the International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).
